Act 1: The Group Qualifiers

The U11 girls went to the Club Langley 9 aside competition on Sunday 20th May that consisted of both U11 and U12 Girls teams, in the 6 team group qualifying stages the 4 highest teams progress to the semi-finals. The games were a straight 10 minutes one way and after 1 win, 2 draws and a loss we found ourselves in the precarious position of being dumped out of the competition needing a draw in our final game to scrape through to the knockout stage.

In the final group game the girls turned up both the class and the heat and romped into the semi-finals with an emphatic 3-0 thumping of a demoralised Beecholme Belles!

Act 2: Knock Out Stage

In the semi-final we faced the home side U12’s and found ourselves a goal behind from a somewhat flukey cross/shot. We managed to get the game back level with a looped shot over the keeper and with a couple of minutes left on the clock found ourselves 2-1 up!

But in the final act the home side went to the long-ball and with their striker jumping up and missing her header the second fluke of the afternoon was scored as the movement and the bounce was enough to beat our keeper. The shrill of the final whistle and... penalties!

Act 3: Penalties

Up stepped our 5 penalty takers, both teams scoring and missing in equal succession. In a dramatic finale it was sudden deat. Up stepped the penalty taker, hushed silence and in flew the final pen that swept... Long Lane into the finals!

Act 4: The Final

We met Anchorian Sapphire’s in the final, a strong U12 Division 1 team. They started well firing a shot across our bows in the opening minute, but we then had them camped in their half for the next 9! Looking for opportunities to find an opening we continuously probed them with threaded passes and runs in behind their beleaguered defence. The pressure was mounting as we won successive corners, but as the minutes ticked past, penalties loomed large again!

Act 5: Final Whistle!

Act 6: Penalties

This time our young athletes stood calm and composed, they had done this less than 15 minutes earlier. Up stepped Anchorian’s 1st penalty taker

  1. AS’s missed
  2. LL scored
  3. AS’s scored
  4. LL scored
  5. AS’s penalty saved
  6. LL scored
  7. AS’s scored

Now at 3-2, one more goal and we’ve won the finals! Almost casually the final Long Lane penalty taker stepped up, placed the ball, and sauntered back to wait for the whistle... deathly silence... I could only hear my own heart beating... shrill of the whistle... strike... net... GOALAZO... Long Lane... Winners!

Act 7: “Zee Germans”!

I could have sworn that when those girls walked back to greet us, they had developed “heavy German accents”, no one beats “Zee German’s” at pens!
